Charging on a steep Clear Mountain block

Homes on Clear Mountain are mostly built into hillsides, with the garage at one level and the switchboard at another, and driveways that climb hard from the road. Trenching straight up or across a steep slope is slow work and sometimes not practical. Often the better route is along the house, under a deck or through the subfloor, using conduit fixed to the structure.

Where the garage is cut into the slope below the house, it may be close to the switchboard in a straight line but separated by a retaining wall. We look at all the options before committing to a route, because the right one can save hours.

The standard choice is a 7kW single-phase wallbox inside the garage. If the car parks outside on a sloping driveway, we position the charger so the cable reaches without dragging and use a holster to keep it off the concrete.

What an EV charger install costs in Clear Mountain

On Clear Mountain properties, the install price starts at Connex Electrical's standard $990 inc GST for a garage close to the main board, plus the charger. Sheds, detached garages and trenching across the block add to that, and every extra is listed in your written quote before work starts.

Included as standard: a new charger circuit and protection at your switchboard, cabling within the standard allowance, mounting, app setup, testing and a compliance certificate. The charger itself is extra unless you already own one.

Keeping your Clear Mountain install affordable

• Send photos of the main board, any shed sub-board and the route between them.
• If the shed already has a sub-board with spare capacity, the charger can often run from there.
• Pick the charger spot before trenching for anything else, so one trench can carry both.
• Park and charge in the garage nearest the house switchboard if you can. Trenching is the biggest extra on acreage.
