How to choose a home EV charger

1. Do you have solar?

If yes, and the car is often home during the day, choose a charger that follows your surplus. See solar EV charging.

2. Tethered or socket?

A tethered charger has the cable attached, so it is grab and go. A socketed charger uses your own cable, which is neater when not in use and works with any plug type.

3. Single or three phase?

Match the charger to your supply. Most Brisbane homes are single phase, where every brand above tops out at about 7kW.

4. App, scheduling and load management

Scheduling lets you charge on cheaper tariff periods. Load management protects your supply if the house is busy. Both are worth having.

5. Warranty and support

Check the manufacturer's warranty length and whether there is local support. We confirm warranty terms in writing with your quote.

Already bought a charger?

We install chargers bought elsewhere, as long as they are approved for sale in Australia. Tell us the model when you ask for a quote. Installation pricing is in the cost guide, and Tesla specifics are on the Tesla Wall Connector page.

EV charger brand FAQs

What is the best EV charger for a home with solar?

A charger that can follow your solar surplus, such as the myenergi Zappi or Fronius Wattpilot. Both use a sensor to see how much you are exporting and adjust charging to match. A Tesla Wall Connector is an excellent charger, but on its own it does not follow your solar export.

Do all EV chargers work with all cars?

In Australia, almost all home chargers and current EVs use the Type 2 connector, so any of these brands will charge any recent EV, including Teslas. A few older imported cars use a different plug and need an adapter or a tethered cable to suit.

Which EV charger should I buy?

Choose on three things: whether you want solar-matched charging, whether you need an app and scheduling, and your budget. A Tesla Wall Connector suits Tesla owners and works with other EVs too. A Zappi or Wattpilot suits solar homes. Simpler units suit plain overnight charging. Tell us your car and setup and we will recommend two or three options.

Can you install a charger I have already bought?

Yes. We install chargers bought elsewhere, including units from car dealers and online stores, as long as they are approved for sale in Australia. Send us the model when you request a quote so we can check its requirements, cable sizing and any network settings before we arrive.

Can a Tesla Wall Connector charge other EVs?

Yes. The current Tesla Wall Connector uses the standard Type 2 plug used in Australia, so it can charge non-Tesla EVs as well. It delivers up to about 7.4kW on single phase. It does not follow your solar surplus on its own (Tesla's solar charging features rely on other Tesla hardware), so solar owners who want that often choose a Zappi or Wattpilot instead.

What warranty do I get?

The charger carries the manufacturer's warranty, which varies by brand and is usually several years. Our workmanship is guaranteed too, and because we are a local Brisbane contractor rather than a call centre, you deal with the same team if anything needs attention. We will confirm the exact warranty terms for your charger in writing with the quote.
