A typical The Gap install
Most homes in The Gap are brick or timber houses from the 1960s through the 1980s, many with a double garage under the house or beside it. The meter box is usually on an outside wall nearby, which makes for a short, simple cable run in a lot of cases.
Boards from that era vary. Some still have the original fuses, while others have been replaced during solar installs or renovations. We check the board, the main switch rating and existing big loads, such as pool pumps, ducted air and electric hot water, before recommending a charge rate.
Since there is no train line, most households here run at least one car, and many run two. If both cars will be electric eventually, a charger with load management, or a pair of chargers that share capacity, is worth planning from the start. A 7kW unit easily covers the drive down Waterworks Road into the city each day.
Life at the end of Waterworks Road
The Gap backs onto the D'Aguilar National Park around Enoggera Reservoir and Walkabout Creek. Homes on the bush edge get plenty of leaf litter and wildlife, so outdoor chargers should be weatherproof and holstered.
Hilly streets mean some garages sit well below or above the switchboard. That changes the cable route but rarely the overall feasibility. Where the garage is a level down from the board, the cable usually drops through the subfloor or runs in conduit down an outside wall, and the price reflects the extra metres rather than any special work.
Rooftop solar is very common here. If you have panels, a solar-aware charger can fill the car from surplus midday generation, which suits anyone working from home.
Storms roll off the range most summers. A charger that resumes on its own after a blackout saves a trip to the garage at midnight to restart a session.

What an EV charger install costs in The Gap
A standard single-phase EV charger installation in The Gap costs from $990 inc GST with Connex Electrical, plus the charger if you need one. Most The Gap houses pay just that. The price only rises for a long cable run, an older switchboard that needs upgrading, or a three-phase charger, and you see any extra in a fixed written quote first.
| Situation | Price |
|---|---|
| Garage or carport close to a modern switchboard | From $990 installed (inc GST) |
| Charger on the far side of the house, or a detached garage | Standard price plus the extra cable, quoted from photos |
| Older board with fuses or no safety switches | Standard price plus a switchboard upgrade, quoted separately |
| Three-phase home with an 11kW or 22kW charger | Quoted per job |
Every standard install includes its own circuit and safety switch protection, the cable run within the standard length, mounting and setup, full testing and a Certificate of Testing and Compliance. The charger itself is extra unless you already own one.

Your questions, answered
We have two cars in The Gap. Can both charge at home?
Yes. Options include two chargers that share a single circuit with load management, or one charger used in turns. Sharing avoids overloading the main switch, especially in homes with ducted air and pool pumps. We assess your board and suggest the setup that suits how both cars are used.
How much does EV charger installation cost in The Gap?
A standard single-phase install in The Gap is from $990 inc GST with Connex Electrical, plus the charger unless you already have one. Long cable runs, switchboard upgrades and three-phase chargers cost extra and are quoted in writing first. Most installs take 2 to 4 hours.
How can I keep EV charger installation affordable in The Gap?
Put the charger close to the switchboard, choose a 7kW single-phase unit and send photos so we can quote without a visit. If you already have a charger, you only pay for installation, at the standard $990 inc GST. Every quote is fixed, so there are no surprises on the day.
Can I charge two EVs at home?
Yes. You can fit two chargers that share the available power, or one charger and plan charging times. Many chargers support load sharing, so both cars charge overnight without overloading your supply. If you expect a second EV soon, mention it at quoting so we size the circuit and cable for it now and save a second callout later.
Do I need three-phase power to charge an EV at home?
No. Most Brisbane homes are single phase, and a single-phase 32A charger delivers up to about 7.4kW, enough to refill a typical daily commute in two or three hours overnight. Three-phase only helps if your car can accept 11kW or 22kW on AC and you regularly need fast top-ups at home. We can tell you which applies to your car.
What is the cheapest way to charge an EV at home in Brisbane?
Charging from your own surplus solar is cheapest, followed by charging overnight on a time-of-use or controlled-load tariff. Energex controlled-load tariffs (Tariff 31 and 33) run on a separate circuit with supply only during set hours, so they suit overnight charging but not daytime solar charging. A time-of-use plan on a smart meter is the usual alternative. Your retailer sets the actual rates. We can wire the charger to suit whichever plan you choose.
