Charging near the university

Many St Lucia residents rent, particularly in the walk-up blocks near the university. If you rent, you will need written permission from the owner, and in a strata building the body corporate also has a say. A portable charging cable on an existing outlet can tide you over, but a properly installed circuit is safer for daily use. Our FAQ page explains the renting process.

Owners of detached houses are in a simpler position. St Lucia has a lot of large homes, some Queenslanders and some newer architect-designed builds. Bigger homes often have bigger electrical loads too, including pools, ducted air and lifts in a few cases, so we check total demand before recommending a charge rate.

In most houses, a single-phase 7kW unit is enough. If you already have three-phase power, an 11kW charger can make sense when two drivers share one wallbox.

St Lucia planning notes

Some St Lucia streets are close to the river, and the low-lying pockets were affected in 2011. If yours is one of them, mounting height is worth discussing. Raising the unit and its isolator onto a higher wall section or a post is a simple change if you ask for it at quote stage.

The suburb has heritage and character controls on parts of its older housing. A wall-mounted charger at the back or under the house is rarely an issue, but anything visible from the street on a character home is worth checking first.

Traffic around the university is heavy at the start and end of semester. We avoid booking St Lucia site visits on those busy mornings where we can, and we will let you know if parking access looks tricky.

EV charger installation cost in St Lucia

In St Lucia, houses with a garage or carport near the board usually pay Connex Electrical's standard $990 inc GST, plus the charger. Apartment installs depend on the body corporate and the car park route, and older homes may need a switchboard upgrade. You get the full price in writing before booking.

Included as standard: a new charger circuit and protection at your switchboard, cabling within the standard allowance, mounting, app setup, testing and a compliance certificate. The charger itself is extra unless you already own one.

Keeping your St Lucia install affordable

• Choose a 7kW single-phase charger. It suits almost every household and avoids three-phase costs.
• Load management lets more chargers share the existing supply, avoiding a costly upgrade.
• Mount the charger on the garage wall closest to the meter box. A shorter run is the easiest saving.
• If you rent, a written scope of works makes it easy for your landlord to say yes.
